December/23/2020. I have been here many times. This is one of my top favor hike in Bay Area. 15.6 miles out and back about 4,352 ft of elevation gain. I started at Mill valley hiking down to Stinson beach and came back. (688 stairs up). Then (648 stairs on the way back). Cuts across a couple of roads, part of trail closed but there’s a diversion set up. It adds about a mile to the total distance ( 0.5 each way). A lot of uphill, the climbs are intense. The beautiful ocean views, a nice stroll through redwood, the varied scenery and terrain are helped keep it interesting. The weather was perfect, I can see Farallon island from the trail. The views from the top so spectacular. It is incredible, amazing, awesome trail. DOUBLE DIPSEA FOR THE WIN. definitely do it again!

Awesome hiking trail! The first mile is all stairs through a beautiful redwood forest. The rest of the trail is more akin to an expected hiking trail. You can go the full 10 miles and end up at Stinson Beach, but there are also several shorter trails you can also take. The trail has amazing views of the entire north and east bay. The entrance has a great playground. Unfortunately the trail has very poor trail markings. There were several times we couldn't easily figure out how to continue on the trail. Also there was also a lot of poison ivy so be careful.

Lots of stairs like everyone already said. Beginning was hard, then it gets easier, then it gets hard again. But it was a good workout and hike.

From redwood forests to sweeping coastal views, the Dipsea trail gives hikers the full range of California biodiversity and views. Be sure to check out the Marin stagecoach schedule - it can be helpful to hike out to stinson and shuttle back. Also, you must follow this local rule: in a group, the last person to spot a given banana slug must kiss it!
