The Yarn Market building in High St, Dunster, Minehead, TA24 6SF, Somerset, England was built in the early 17th century and has subsequently been designated as a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument. The building itself is of an octagonal construction around a central pier and its tiled roof sheltered traders and their wares from the rain. Historically, by the 13th century, Dunster had become a centre for woollen and clothing production with a market [but not the building] dating back to at least 1222. By the 15th century Dunster's trading importance was however on the wane, which was ironically the driving force for the construction of The Yarn Market circa 1609. We had been located for a time in the mid-1960s in Doniford, Somerset, which is only 8 miles away from Dunster, and we knew the village very well. So imagine our surprise when we saw an episode of the Poirot TV series that featured The Yarn Market building as being set in Cornwall. Talk about artistic license?

A beautiful historic timber building set within the heart of the medieval town of Dunster. There are history panels to read within the building and links to the castle at the top of the hill. Parking is available nearby on an hour or longer which is free or in the nearby car park which is a pay and display.

Historic and in a nice setting, although not as old as you might think. Info board on site; free to see.

Very cute little spot. Covered in pom poms at the moment.

We are so lucky for towns such as Dunster to keep and maintain such architecture such as The Yarn Market.
