This monument stands in tribute to Jules Cornet, a 19th and 20th century Belgian geologist who taught at the Polytechnic Faculty of Mons. He is also well known for having the dubious distinction of discovering the mineral wealth of the then fiefdom of Congo, which led to the exploitation of its resources for Belgium. The monument features a bronze bust of Jules Cornet that actually includes most of his torso as well. The bust stands in front of a panel explaining his achievements. On the back of the panel is two reliefs alluding to mining.
