Casa Amesti, with its two-story elevation, plastered adobe walls and projecting second floor balcony, is an outstanding example of the Monterey Colonial Style which combines elements of Hispanic and Anglo architectural styles. Jose Amesti immigrated from the Basque region of Spain in 1822 and built this adobe house between 1833 and 1855. Originally, the house had only one story. The second story was added after 1855 as the family prospered. In 1918, interior designer Frances Adler Elkins moved into a somewhat dilapidated Casa Amesti. She lived here for thirty-five years and transformed the house and garden into an important showplace in Monterey. In 1953, Elkins donated the property to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is now leased to a private men's club, the Old Capitol Club. Casa Amesti contributes to the Old Town Historic District which is a National Landmark.
