I called to make a pick up order and was delighted to talk with the owner, Eric. He quickly reminded me that he and his mother delivered coffee to my house one week before she passed in 1995. Union Coffee is like family to me and most everyone that buys from them. Their blends of coffee are constantly evolving and the staff is knowledgeable about coffee choice based on customer taste. While one waits for your order, it is recommended to indulge in an expresso/latte,soaking in the smell of freshly ground coffee while listening to other client(limited to 3 due to Covid) needs. . On this occasion, I was more than pleased to also see a full plate of doughnuts a l'ancienne on the counter. Homemade by one of the staff, I couldn't resist. With a delicious LATTE at hand, the experience was more than good. You learn quickly in the store that Union does a large repair business of Pavoni and Gaggia machines that have been a mainstay of the company's equipment and coffee accessories business for years. Their coffee bags feature that the business began in 1910. The Kouri family involvement started in 1928 when Eric's dad began at the age of 14. He bought the business 36 years later. The retail store moved to its current location in 1969 on Jean Talon. 3 years later when Eric's dad passed, his mother took over the business A small diminutive woman, I highlight her because she was special for her kind, human and warm demeanor. Today Eric's sons operate a burgeoning roast and wholesale business. The retail store remains a testament to a proud family- run business, the love of coffee, good people and maybe the sugary taste of a delicious homemade doughnut.
