Many thanks to Matt, Jack and Lee at Morman Marine Surveyors. I am an out of town buyer and they did a very professional, thorough job surveying a sailboat in Detroit, MI. They took the time to explain in clear terms both the pros and the cons of the boat - an essential part of the buying process, especially over a long distance.

Jack was excellent to work with, doing a pre-purchase survey. He was very thorough and involved me in all facets of the survey. He alerted me to areas of concern and what would need to be done to fix them. He made sure I understood everything that he was talking about and didn't hesitate to answer my questions. He was incredibly professional and friendly, and didn't talk down to me. I really appreciated his time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone considering buying a boat.

Not sure if Jack is still working but wouldn't use Matt. And If I were selling a boat, I would definitely not allow the buyer to use him as the surveyor for a contingent inspection. Plenty of other surveyors out there.

I engaged Morman marine surveyors to do a survey on a 29 foot Sundancer and a 1983 Trojan 32 in the spring of 2020. I have previously owned 2 Searays and never doubted that the boat would pass the survey- the boat looked great and had been meticulously maintained. Matt Morman was my surveyor and he quickly found some minor issues such as that one of the outdrives had a limiter that would not allow the motor to hit the swim platform, the wire was broken. Once in side the boat he pulled up the cushions in the mid-cabin and using his meter detected extremely high moisture readings which as Matt explained indicated a very serious structural issue that if not resolved could affect the integrity of the boat/value. Matt went into great detail and took his time explaining to me why he would not recommend that I buy the boat. I was disappointed but also relieved. He impressed me with his deep knowledge of what was happening inside those wet timbers and what would eventually happen if it was not addressed. Matt also ended the survey early and did not charge me the full price. He also helped the owner with some suggestions on how to fix the problem and save him from doing major fiberglass repairs. We then found another boat that had also been meticulously maintained, a 1983 Trojan 32 and engaged Jack to do the survey. Jack was absolutely great! Knowing that this model had issues with the stingers he told me that if he found a problem he would stop the survey. He found that the stringers were still sound and although there were some other soft spots in the decking he explained how they could be fixed. Jack obviously has a depth of knowledge about boat construction and the various strengths and weaknesses of various models/makes. We bought this boat and have been very happy with our purchase. I learned a lot from spending a couple of hours with both these two gentlemen and would highly recommend them to anyone seeking a professional survey. Colin Miller, July 2020

After a dozen or so phone calls looking for a sailboat surveyor ( with eight of the twelve suggesting Morman Marine Surveyors since none of the other calls did sailboats ) I called and Morman Surveyors and had an appointment set up with very little paperwork evolved thanks to their helpful office personal. On the day of the survey, I was contact by Matt, and confirmed our meeting place, followed very shortly by his arrival. I never expected such a knowledgeable experience to take place, but got just that. Not only did Matt do a very through survey focusing on my main concerns, he made sure to include me, showing me what he was looking at, the ranges of readings we where looking for, as well as the how and why we where getting the results we where getting. Explanation of the structural impact some of our findings would have on the boat, but more over not condemning the boat, but reassuring me the level of the concern until we did meet a critical failure towards the end of the survey. I would recommend the services of Morman Marine Surveyors to anyone as a prepurchase survey prior to buying a boat.
