Even though the main part of this historical complex in the middle of Naha burnt down on 31 October 2019 in dramatic, headlining fashion, a visit to Shurijo is a must. Why? Because you learn about the Ryukyu Kingdom and understand that the people of Okinawa, whilst Japanese now, are also descended from a very ancient and separate culture. The kingdom managed to trade and interact with China, Korea and Japan before finally being peacefully annexed by the latter in 1879 during the Meiji Period of the 19th century. The World Heritage-listed site has been badly damaged by reparations are underway to restore the central Seiden and Nansen sections to their former glory. I hope to come back and see Shurijo again in 2026!

The best place for some historical learning and understanding the heritage of Naha and Okinawa. I took an audio tour to assist with my visit. The place is really nice, well maintained, and under renovation to make it better. There are some good shops and restaurants nearby, souvenirs to buy and traditional costumes to try. The ladies can try the costumes and pose for pics with the local lady in costume near the entrance of the castle. Good videos overall, highly recommended for a visit with family.

Most of the exhibits are pretty much destroyed and or displayed as debris and rubble which is kind of sad because we wanted to see more ofthe castle before it was destroyed. But the experience still worth the 400 yen also parking in the garage it’s also like 320 Yen.

I visited Shuri Castle in July after the great fire. Most of the structure seems to be intact but you can clearly see the areas that were devastated by the fire. The castle grounds are big so definitely a great place to take a walk and enjoy the many different areas to explore. There is a guest center with a small museum space, areas to take a rest, gift shop and restrooms.

The castle was awe-inspiring, it saddened me to realized I will perhaps never see it as it once stood before the fire, but I appreciated the beauty of it all the same along with the effort that has been taken to preserve it even after tragedy. Definitely informative piece of history but also brings in a light of respect for such a historic place and how hard it can be to preserve, but I'm happy that it is still here and I had the chance to see it.

The main building (shown) is no longer there. Disappointing because that was one of my reasons to go in the first place. Overall, it's a nice stroll around the property and it has a nice view of the city from the top of the observation point.

This is a power spot place. you can feel the calm and feel the history in all the spaces. the food was definitely great! i wish i could visit this place before the big fire. you can still feel the fire smell when you are inside.

There's a lot of history at this castle. It is definitely worth the price of admission. The walk from the metro station is not that bad provided it is not a very hot and humid day. However, if it is make sure you have enough water. If you are coming from the metro station take the first available left toward the castle and don't make the mistake of continuing down the road.
