This is not one of those places that you say\ Oh My God! We have to go there.\ But it is one of those places that gives more insight into the dietary habits of people of the region in the past as this Dovecote was for harvesting domesticated Squab for the table. It also has a lovely walk up the hill with flowers all around the path. There is a commanding view of the local area from the top of the hill where the Dovecote is located with a descriptive tablet. As an interesting note we had stopped for the night at a seaside hotel north of Blackpool a few years ago. At dinner they offered Pigeon for an Appetizer, which I delightedly ordered. It was a lovely breast of pigeon. However I was surprised to bite down, fortunately not too hard, on what looked like a #8 shot lead pellet. As a \wingshot\ I was overcome with joy that someone had shot this pigeon, but if I hadn't been so happy about it I might have negotiated another breast. Curses! The emotions spoiled a grand opportunity.
This 17th century doocot is in extremely good condition. The doocot is situated on castle hill in the village of Auldearn. It was presented to the National Trust for Scotland in 1947. The little building is not open to the public but you do get a nice view of the surrounding countryside. It is interesting to note that the Battle of Auldearn was fought in the fields nearby on the 9th May 1645. If you have an interest in local history it is well worth the short walk to see the doocot and read the information notice boards. There is no charge but you can leave a dination in the collection box.
