Nandi, India

9th century temple with some amazing stone carvings. For the first time we found birds carved on temple pillars. Also had a temple pond with tiny fishes often seen at fish spas.

Nice place for one day ride.
Commissioned by the Vijaynagara king's, is a massive water tank with rock-cut steps to the water level, known as Shringi Teertha. Shringa being horns & Teertha meaning site of pilgrimage, it is believed that the Nandi, dug its horn into the ground to draw water from the divine Ganga. This pond is believed to be the source of the Dakshina Pinakini or South Pennar River. The river is named so as Shiva is considered to be the almighty wielder of Pinaki (mighty bow) Thousands of earthen oil lamps are lit on the steps around the tank during Shivaratri, Pongal & Diwali.
Very nice place. Closes before temple at 5.30pm
