One of the most beautiful buildings you'll see, however, there's not much to be seen inside, at least currently. The atmosphere feels oppressive and unwelcoming, there are no books to be read, it's just a small collection of artwork and books for sale.

The National Library of Spain is housed in a beautiful building and contains a world collection of books and other written materials. Pity it's not accessible to the general public and obviously mostly in Spanish. On the lover ground floor, there a public museum containing information about the history of writing and publications which does have a good amount of information in both English and Spanish. Worth visiting if you have a little extra time on your hands.
Better and worse access than other libraries. Good WiFi. Anyone gets a library card for 3 years. This is better than all libraries in the US (except the NYPL, where anyone can get a card for 3 months, 3 years for NY residents). One cannot take home books. To get a library card is easy (takes about 10’). The library is closed on Sunday, and on Saturday at 2:00 PM. Visitors cannot see much, or get access to the general reading room (as one can do in the US). There are free lockers. The WiFi is better than at US public libraries
Beautiful inside and out, but if you are expecting an actual library, prepare to be disappointed. It's only a museum with about two collections on display for the public.
So Glorious!! Amazing place! The architecture is beyond beautiful & perfect in every detail! I could spend all day in front of this masterpiece admiring it! Is definitely one of the largest and most beautiful libraries that I’ve seen in my entire life! It’s in the city centre, easy to reach, located on the “Paseo de Recoletos”. A must see when in Madrid.
