One might say that it's a seedy hotel, another might say that it's charming, and they'd both be right. If you're tired of the same-old same-old plastic McLuxury found in most hotels today, well then this is definitely different. The room was clean, but the walls carried at least a century of paint layered to a significant depth. There is history in that! The bath was old fashioned but like most old fashioned baths, it was adequate, and it did included a very comfortable "normal" sized tub (not those micro sizes so common today). We were in the front on the fourth floor, I could see the L of an vertical HOTEL DUNCAN sign out my curtained window. It was an eerie but soft white at night. I am grateful it wasn't flashing. The Lobby was right out of the 1890s. Not as glitzy as some I've seen, but definitely authentic, right down to the photos of celebrity guests covering one wall of an adjoining office. The treasure of this hotel is the manually operated elevator. Now by "manually", I don't mean you had to push a button extra hard. No, there was an actual employee whose job was to run the elevator! Opening the door, closing it again, closing the safety gate, then pushing the rheostat thingy forward for going up, backward for going down. Good Lord! I haven't seen one of those since going with my Mom shopping at Hartford's old G Fox and Company back in the 1950s! The staff were a delight. Very friendly, very cooperative. When it was pouring out, they volunteered to loan us an umbrella. Apparently, they keep a supply! This hotel's not for every day, but I'll definitely be back. :-)

My boyfriend and I have stayed the Hotel Duncan twice now. We agreed that we had positive experiences both times. Yes the hotel is very old but it's has lots of quirks that keep us coming back. The staff has always been friendly to us, and very helpful. It has a great location for shopping and food, and costs half to 1/3 what other hotels in the area are looking for, even on weekends. There are always rooms available and we consider it a little gem in New Haven.

If you compare this hotel to others you're probably going to be disappointed. It is a product of its time which gives it a certain amount of charm. Everything works, and rooms are comfortable. The staff were pleasant and the location is excellent. The only major gripe is I wished they communicated the parking situation better; there's a garage nearby you can use (17 / night) if you don't want to play street parking roulette.

The Duncan is very cozy, though not modern. It's a genuine old-time traveling-salesman's kind of place. If you want palatial appointments, better go somewhere else - and spend 3 or 4 times as much. I've never had a bad stay at the Duncan. And that friendly, family-based staff - you stay there once, and then the second time, you find *you're* family too. I hope "Big Al" is doing well: it was fun to get in late at night and get drawn into a conversation with him about Italian tenors :)

The Hotel Duncan is a unique place, the lovechild between the hotel from The Shining and a David Lynch fever dream. It's a trip to the past. Its decade-old charm will be sorely missed in its new renovation. Price is great, rooms are just dilapidated enough, location is excellent. Stay here before it changes in late 2017

Old building with a formality feel, but very courteous and friendly staff, free WiFi, and good location for many food options. Very cool hand-operated elevator (claiming to be the oldest one in the state). I would go back.

The people at reception were nice and helpful. But... The room was less than half the size of that specified on Expedia. There was no Internet service in the room. It was advertised as having a "city view" - the window was so grimy and opaque that there was no view at all. The curtains were so thin as to be transparent. There was (dated) graffiti on the bathroom wall, from 2013. The door lock was broken. The toilet roll holder was falling off the wall. Very shabby and run-down. No tea/coffee-making facilities. It should be noted that after (I think) 9pm, the elevator stops working, and you have to use the stairs.
