The Chapel was purpose built to house Stanley Spencer's paintings of his experiences during the first world War, first as a medical orderly at a military hospital and then at the Selonica front. They do not glorify war but dwell on the daily chores and mundane activities of service. Best seen on a bright but cloudy day as there is no artificial light in the Chapel.

The chapel itself is an unusual Grade 1 listed 1920s building, commissioned by Mary and Louis Behrend as a memorial to Mary's brother, Lieutenant Henry Willoughby Sandham, who died at the end of the First World War.. The 17 Stanley Spencer paintings of his experiences in the First World War are stunning. It's a pity you're not allowed to photograph them.

Great to be able to see such personal and poignant artworks up close and in such a tranquil setting. Bit pricey if you're not a member of the National Trust

The Chapel paintings depicting both Stanley Spencer's work as a medical orderly at Beaufort Hospital and the bloody campaign in Salonika are quite captivating. You can spend a good 30 minutes looking at all the detail depicted in each scene and the volunteers give you a handy information sheet to provide you with more information on each scene. Most definately worth a visit, particularly if you can combine with another NT attraction nearby, e.g the Winchester Mill. Alas, no photos allowed inside the Chapel. In the adjoining building you can view a very good video on the Salonika Campaign. It is worth seeing this before visiting the Chapel to give you a better perspective.

I live nearby the chapel and had no idea what it was, just assuming it was another random church, but in fact it really is an art gallery and memorial to a forgotten conflict. Informative, moving and inspirational, the chapel itself is really quite breathtaking, especially if you're not really expecting it! Would definitely visit again some time.

Very good memorial to the work of Stanley Spencer, jaw dropping murals of his time in the first world war, amazing size and scope of his paintings, very good.

Small National Trust owned property that has a number of thought provoking works of art by Stanley Spencer. (Best search using Google for an in-depth description of the works.) Parking is limited and due to the size of the property there is no traditional National Trust tea room. There is however a decent pub a short walk from the property that does light refreshments. When we visited there was a small self service pop up tea room but I'm unsure how long this is scheduled to remain a feature of the property. Well worth a visit but don't expect a huge property.

Lot more to see than we thought (including a temp art exhibition). Were there at least 2 hours and bought a present from the shop. You can picnic at the back in the small garden (though we didn't as we had planned to go to a second NT place same day). Interesting place
