The barrier to adoption of connected technology is in the understanding of the benefits, and improvements a connected health system can offer to the patient. During the consultation exercise by the European Commission in 2014, it was identified there is still a widespread concern surrounding issues such as, quality, reliability, data overload, privacy and security. However, as technology has enabled health products to become more mainstream, the status-quo surrounding the cost and effectiveness of these systems is gradually changing around the world. For example, Africa has 15 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants and 62 per cent of the population live in rural areas where access to medical facilities is extremely difficult. Tuberculosis, malaria and pregnancy related problems among others, account for three million deaths in Africa each year. Mobile phone penetration in Africa has reached 82 per cent in a recent study. This trend in technology growth in Africa has increased the rate at which eHealth applications can be adopted, which has encouraged implementation of low cost digital health technologies which can reach further into the underserved populations, or indeed at the Point-of-Care.
