Just want to thank the staff at The Great Northern Hotel for hosting our Newcastle Fringe Festival After Party on Sunday 21 March. The artists and organisers gathered together to celebrate a successful festival and present some awards. Maynard was there to spin some retro tunes and we all had a fun time. The staff were friendly and helpful and our event ran smoothly from start to finish. Thanks everyone!

Friendly staff. Great meals. Accommodation good. Rooms a little small but very clean. You can see an upgrade in the bathroom / toilet area. Overall a great place to stay.
Best chicken snitty and chips I've had in ages. A bigger serving of sauce/gravy would be good.
Look, the pub was fine but the people inside were horrid. There were several people I ran into that were stumbling across the floor and yet still were being served. One of my mates got a drink thrown at him whilst in the bathroom, and there were some really homophobic people there. Perhaps it was just the day I arrived but I probably wouldn't go here again unless I felt like watching people throw up.
Experience: warm, relaxed and friendly vibe. At standard for a pub-style place. Meals were admittedly overpriced for a pub. Live entertainment was on point. 3/5 stars for experience. Customer service: friendly staff. Service: pretty quick for a Sunday evening. Food: Rustic Fries with house made aioli: perfect! Good portion and great taste. Bruschetta: generous portion, ratios were almost there, where flavour balance was thrown a tad off by overdressing of the balsamic vinegar. Otherwise delicious. Crumbed lamb cutlets: the lamb was under seasoned, meat itself was dry and tough. The crumbed coating took away from the lamb which was disappointing. The garlic/truffle mash was pleasant in the first 2 mouthfuls then became overpowering. The vegetables were a strange mix of capsicum, zucchini, green beans, asparagus which did not complement the lamb dish at all. The gravy was lacking in flavour. I would say having a more simple approach would be beneficial. Tasmanian crispy skin salmon: large portion size, the salmon was divine!!! The roasted potatoes did make the dish heavy. Green beans and asparagus were great, however the capsicum and zucchini were unnecessary. The portion of corn was awkward to eat and didn't quite fit with the dish. Drinks: unfortunately we did not plan to drink this particular night, there seemed to be a lack of variety and seemed to be overpriced for a can of coke. Otherwise a pleasant experience! We recommend this place for people to chill out at.
Check in was easy. Food was fast and big portions. Friendly staff. If you want to go on Friday, Saturday or Sunday night get there early.
Great little secret. Simple food done well beer crisp clean cold One Newcastle's great old pub's
The worst place ever you can hang out with friends the MANAGER was so rude no customer service skills at all and unprofessional as well. They lost heaps of customers because of him and they are going to lose more if he stayed there I don’t recommend this place at all unless the manager get kicked out I have heaps of friends had the same experience and they would never ever go there anymore. Health concern: To whom it May concern: the MANAGER was not practicing the social distancing at all when he came to talk with me he was so close and was touching me i was so gentleman with him but I think he is there to fight with people and show off. My evidence is (CCTV) I would say it’s not a safe place to spend your time there, also it was fully of teenage people no-one was checking their ID properly. (Health organisation has been advised) (Fair trading has been advised) Message to the owner of the great northern hotel as well.
