You don't often get to climb tothe top of this monument so jumped at the chance when the Botanist offered it plus meal. You enter through a tiny door and are advised to go in backwards and keep bent for a while so you don't crack your head ! felt sorry for tall guy who was in our group! Then up the 164 steps of the spiral staircase to the top. You can't see from outside but there are small slits in wall where you could see glimpses of city as you climb. Incredible views from top but you can't see much of Lord Grey as he's on plinth above and starting to look very weather beaten. Seemingly he was struck by lightening many years ago and his head fell off but thankfully it got put back on!

An iconic landmark of Newcastle and monument to Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey. It's position at the top of a hill and the junction of several a lot streets makes it clearly visible from a long way off. It's an impressive 130 something metres tall and definitely worth a detour to see.
Love this spot as the sun rises over Newcastle in the morning.
A distinctive monument, huge and beautiful. A good meeting point as it's central. I don't know much about it's history because it was too cold and wet to hang around!
Amazing historic column in the centre of Newcastle, stunning views from street level. Easy to get to with the local buses and Metro stopping close by.
Monument Tour was great, we were able to go up the inside to the viewing platfo at the top! The view over Newcastle were spectacular
Had a lovely time at the Christmas Market and enjoyed Après bar. Would recommend visiting here.
Stands out at the top of Gray Street Newcastle, where it is surrounded by shops, bars & eateries, or just relax on it's steps and listen to buskers in the sunshine. Part of this cities history and architecture. Buzzing place.
