Although I only worked with Jimmy for two years, those years provided me with more opportunities and experiences than all the years prior. My previous teacher ingrained technique and repertoire into my skillset extremely well, but my performing ability was lacking. Jimmy taught me to play with passion and command, rather than just raw ability. What use is dexterity without fervor? Jimmy has a comparatively laid-back teaching style, but still expects results. He will still push you to the limits of your capability. In just two years, he gave me the opportunity to play in multiple recitals and theatrical performances. He is surely a teacher like to other.

As a cast member of the Queensville Players Into the Woods musical theatre production in 2017, I was privileged to work with Jimmy Tao, our awesome musical director. Jimmy’s vast piano expertise brought the intricate and demanding score of this show to life. His skilful direction of the 18-piece orchestra added a creative and playful zest to its intricate story and to its wide variety of characters throughout. I loved Jimmy’s emphasis on the details of the whimsical sound effects in this fairy tale satire. They were particularly fun and delightful, adding a rich dimension to the plot and character portrayal. I recall vividly Jimmy’s hard work and persistence at every single rehearsal, and his kind and empathetic ability in enhancing the confidence and goodwill of every member in the cast. I also had the pleasure of working with Jimmy in the Queensville Players production of The Wizard of Oz in 2015. In this show as well, Jimmy worked tirelessly to help our cast make the most of their musical talents. He was invariably professional and supportive to all cast and orchestra members at all times, even after a long and busy rehearsal. Frequent written cast notes were sent out by Jimmy to everyone, and whenever anyone requested additional help with a piece of music, Jimmy was promptly available. His suggestions were always helpful and precise, well-articulated and constructively given. Evidence of the superior and indelible quality of Jimmy’s excellent musical direction was demonstrated in the hugely positive feedback in both productions from both audiences and adjudicators alike!
There are lots of excellent pianist but not many excellent piano teachers. Jimmy is definitely an awesome piano teacher and also my 6-year old daughter’s favorite teacher. Jimmy has a way to understand and communicate with kids. I’m always amazed by the way he explains those music theories to a little kid, making them interesting and so easy for kids to understand. My daughter has been learning piano with Jimmy for over a year. She’s interested, self-motivated, and always practises and looks forward to her weekly piano class. She wouldn’t be the same if not with Jimmy!
I took piano lessons with Jimmy for over six years and I've learned so much over this time. Jimmy is a talented musician and has experience and skill in a variety of styles. Jimmy has a relaxed teaching style but he always encourages you to push your limits. Jimmy emphasizes the importance of expression in music and practical skills such as sight reading. With Jimmy I had the opportunity to participate in many performances and festivals, which were fun, challenging, and taught me a lot. Jimmy is very helpful, encouraging, and passionate about what he does. He helped me to develop a similar passion for music. Thanks Jimmy for helping me become the musician I am today.
Jimmy has been a fantastic teacher for me. He knows how to put performers at ease when they're nervous and can teach at all levels of musical ability. I've done 2 shows with him now and cannot wait to work with him again!
