Stopped by and visited on this National day of Mourning. This place as it currently sits is beautiful with a dark history. San Luis Rey Mission like all other missions held Natives as slaves. They forced them to follow Christianity and usually didn't allow them to leave unless they were \trusted\. Many Natives would run away from missions throughout the history of the Missions. If they were ever captured by the soldiers and brought back they would have their backs whipped, some until their deaths. After experiencing oppression and horror, Natives started rebellion and started fighting for their freedom. Any Native who was considered a leader would be sentence to death if captured.

Slowly but surely we're trying to finish our visits to all these Mission's, so this would be #10 on our list Mission San Luis Rey de Francia. Named after St. Louis IX, King of France. Now while we went a couple of weeks ago, the Church was closed off on the front so we couldn't step foot inside. The Garden was off limits, so we could only take pictures from the side but it did look beautiful and well kept. The museum was closed until further notice, so it looks like we're going to have to return to this Mission to do a little more exploring. The gift shop was open though lol. The cemetery old and new are very massive and both are very well kept We will have to return since what we mostly did was walk around cemetery and the gift shop. #18 of 21

Beautiful place with a long (by American standards---not so much by colonial Spanish standards or European standards). Anything in the western US that dates to the 18th century is worthy of study. Brought our kids here back over the holidays in 2007 while visiting the in-laws. I also enjoyed the US/Mexico War connection.

Beautiful, beautiful mission. Wish alot more of the grounds were open to public. The museum could be a bit bigger considering how big the grounds are.

This is where my loving brother Anthony Lowell Bugg is buried. It's very beautiful and a gorgeous place where he is laid to rest. Hopefully I will be able to get to see this place and see his headstone.
