Not being open Monday and Tuesday is ridiculous. HD a small tour group keen to visit but on arrival found it closed. How stupid is that?

It is a fantastic place to visit.

The original mural with the founder, Murray Thacker, driving bullocks was much better than the present decoration on the front of the building now. It's a pity that 'experts' came in and painted over it without finding out more about the mural. Very tactless, as the man had only recently died, and this museum was his life's work. It really wasn't good enough.

Spectacular views, remote bay, with a museum collection of pre and post European Maori artefacts, rated as "of national significance" . A must see, plus various early settlers exhibits. Expect winding roads, steep hills, and leave plenty of time to goggle at the treasures on show.

Amazing museum seemingly tucked away in the back of beyond. Highly recommended, in fact worth going out of your way to make the stop. Also plan for a good hour as they have a great collection of early Maori artifacts and history as well as the colonial history. Then not far to pop into the cool Okains Bay General store with a great collection of retro bits and pieces to fit out your campervan and grab an ice cream.

Great little open air museum, liked the blacksmiths using the forge and the print shop was great, all very good

Fabulous museum with a wide variety of contents, but a particularly good Maori collection. Especially liked the pataka, and the explanations of the lovely carvings on it.
