CAMPERS BEWARE – J & S Fish Camp is a scam. J&S Fish Camp, in Okeechobee, FL is advertised as having beautiful lakeside views, charming cabins, and spacious RV sites. My neighbor & I reserved (2) adjacent ‘premium’ waterfront RV sites for the last weekend in January. By all the listed photos and description, we expected a beautiful relaxing weekend. When we arrived, we were immediately met with some hesitation and disappointment. The ‘office’ is not much of an office at all. It is a bar, surrounded by customers who are eating, drinking, and smoking cigarettes. I was greeted first by a customer at the bar who told me, ‘she’ll be right out’. When the camp employee came out, and I greeted her with a ‘how are you?’. Her response: “not good”. Without going into any detail, she led us to our assigned sites to look, as she had alluded to them not being what we needed. We walked past several other sites that were very clearly long-term residents. When we arrived, at our ‘premium waterfront sites’, it was obvious that they were not ready to accommodate us at all and had not been used this way for some time. Someone from a neighboring site had their minivan parked on one of our sites. The site itself was uneven, and in a hole. The area for my travel trailer (which was advertised as able to fit vehicles up to 53’ long) was about 2’ below the grade of the road, and nowhere near large enough to accommodate my 34’ travel trailer. The adjacent site we reserved still had the remnants of a structure that had once stood there. It wasn’t even large enough to accommodate my neighbor’s 25’ trans-van. Clearly this was not going to work. We were frustrated that we had traveled 90 minutes out of our way for a site we could not use. The camp employee agreed to refund the charges, but three weeks later, and after multiple phone calls not returned – I ended up having to dispute the charges through my credit card company.

This little place is living history with sweet southern charm and real folks enjoying life. If your looking for down to earth quaint and quirky stop and stay awhile.

Nice relaxing stop on the bike ride around the lake. Be sure to bring cash and definitely try Moe's Kitchen if the truck is there!
