Otaru Aquarium is kind of an iconic spot to visit in Otaru, but it's definitely toned down in winter. Expect to take a taxi here if you're not driving, which is around 47 to-and-back from downtown Otaru There's a ferris wheel next to the aquarium, but it looks like it's too cold to operate in winter. Tickets for adults were 1000 yen and they had multiple language pamphlets ready for international visitors. One thing I did like about coming during winter was the silence in the halls. You can actually properly look at all the animal exhibits and examine them in peace. There's quite a few specimens here, but the biggest draw is the penguin walk and dolphin and seal show. I believe the last penguin walk is 2PM, but there's a dolphin and seal show shortly after. It's a good family spot, but probably not the best if you're traveling alone. There's a certain joy when a father can share in the delight of his children's first experience with animals, but it's something else when you're a lone adult looking at two seals, where one of them is clearly gaming the trainers for extra fish by refusing to do tricks until they tip you. Would definitely recommend if you're with family or if you're into dolphins and penguins. Otherwise, might want to come back in the future when you grow a family of your own.

Like many who have mentioned, the facility is dated and would probably benefit from a facelift. The animal shows and display at the Marine Mammal Park (outdoor) are probably the only thing that is worth it. The path from the aquarium main building to this outdoor park is routed with steep slopes (downhill). Something for visitors with young children and elderly to take note. There is however a escalator (uphill) available for the return route to the main building.

Must bring your kids here. So many interactive activities in this aquarium, walking with penguins, feeding the real fish to seals, touch the sea urchin& star. Get to watch dolphins and sea lion show. The fish they have is more rare and mostly cute. Staffs are very nice and professional. Price is reasonable. Easily reach here by bus from Otaru bus station. Part of the aquarium is outdoor, so it’s quite cold then, make sure u bring enough cloth.

A great place to learn about sea animals and fishes. There are various animal shows such as dolphins and seals and also feeding sessions. The penguin feeding session is absolutely hilarious, do try to catch it. The place is a little run down, but all clean and spotless (usual Japanese standards).
