St.Thomas Church known as 'Pala Pally' built on the banks of Meenachil river in the year AD 1002, later elevated to 'Valiapally' and then Cathedral. Ancient and famous catholic families - Tharayil, Erakonni, Vayalakkombu & Koottunkal together put their efforts to fulfill the construction of the church. When years rolled out the influx of the faithful also increased. So in 18th Centuary the 'Pazhaya Pally' (the old church now) had been constructed. Pala diocese is constituted on 1950 July 25 under the Arch Diocese of Changanassery. The first Bishop was Mar Sebastian Vayalil and after His retirement the then Aux. Bishop Mar Joseph Pallickaparambil became the bishop. Mar Sebastian Vayalil died on 21st Nov. 1986. Mar Joseph Kallarangattu is the Bishop of Pala now and His Excellency Mar Kallarangattu is guiding his flocks along with Aux. Bishop Mar Jacob Murickan. Pala diocese is engaged in various services in the spiritual, social, educational, medical and economical fields. Pala diocese has contributed to the catholic church the highest no. of priests and bishops and they are administering in various diocese and different countries.
