The Small Animal Surgeon Ltd (TSAS) was established in October 2003 and is owned and operated by Dr Ruth Youmans. Ruth is a veterinary specialist registered by the Veterinary Council of New Zealand in the field of Small Animal Surgery. Our primary function is to provide specialist consultancy, and surgical procedures to referring veterinarians and their clients to aid in the treatment of companion and small animals (cats, dogs, etc). Clients are either referred to Ruth by their general practice veterinarian, or can ask to be referred, in situations where specialist knowledge, a second opinion, skills and care are required or have been requested. The referred client and their pet will be requested to attend a consultation with Ruth to discuss patient history, presentation, initial diagnosis and possible treatment. From this point the client can then decide to progress with further specialist services or decide to return to their regular veterinarian for general practice care. Ruth accepts cases for both diagnostic evaluations and for surgical treatment. We are also able to offer diagnostics via access to digital radiography, MRI and CT. We accept cats and dogs that require diagnosis and treatment of lameness, neurological / spinal conditions, cancer, fractures, skin grafting and soft tissue surgery. We do not perform surgical procedures for cosmetic reasons, and do not normally accept cases for dentistry or routine de-sexing. On rare occasions, we will perform de-sexing surgery on pets that are deemed a very high anaesthetic risk, if this is prompted by their referring veterinarian. We aim to work closely with both the pet-owner and their regular veterinarian to provide advanced treatment with the patients best interests at heart. In many cases our patients are referred from distant centres, thus we find good communication with all involved parties is critical in achieving a successful outcome.
