Lovely interior, good food and local beer, behind the building is a damaged peel tower, and opposite a wonderful church built in 1762

My companions and I spent the last night of our Coast to Coast section at the Crown and Mitre Inn in Bampton Grange (Saturday the 19th of September) . This is a delightful establishment full of character with lovely rooms and very distinctive illustrations and paintings (particularly those related to bomber command or mediaeval london) in a delightful village full of charm and history. I would normally have no hesitation giving the C&M five stars out of five. However, I believe that, for an establishment charging the highest price of any we paid on the route, customer comfort should be of paramount importance. I can fully understand that the season was drawing to a close and that the list of shorts was being cut back and no longer being replenished and that some taps were no longer being supplied and that the menu list was substantially shorter than usual. I can also understand if I had been told that the heating system had been turned off and that I would be supplied with a heating unit to maintain a degree of warmth in the rooms. What is absolutely unacceptable however, is if I am told three times by the lady behind the bar that she was surprised that the heating was not yet on and would see to it that the radiators would be working (without any offer of substitute heating). This appears to have been a clear deception , that there was no intention of providing any heating and I would suggest that the staff would benefit from training in hospitality procedures. However on the positive side, as far as concerns the limited menu offering , I have to commend the quality of the dish that we chose (steak & mushroom pie) and believe that this is the first time in years that I have had a truly ‘home-made’ pie, the pastry was really outstanding.
Tried to book but closed unless you are a local. (a local's explanation not mine). Rang up and told to go to Askham. Would give zero stars if possible.
Very good and appreciate great service
Fabulous welcome, very comfy beds (we had 2 rooms), great food and a roaring fire. What more could you want? And reasonable costs!
Hard to find it open but managed once. Full of character
Stayed in Room 1. Good size room, with a great view of the church to the front of the building. En-suite was nice, but the shower was in need of a little TLC (nothing big, just the tub to the shower head was falling apart). Breakfast was very nice and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We would stay again.
We had a group of 8 and enjoyed our stay. The restaurant was cozy and the food was good. They were short staffed the day we were there but we were not in a hurry. Rooms were comfortable with good beds. Most rooms had enough room for our luggage etc.
