The quality of the room was very good. The bed was soft with lots of pillows and cushions. The view from the window was gorgeous. The food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious - compliments to the chef. Nothing was too much trouble for our hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

The owner must have removed my review, due to the harshness! This is the worst place I've ever stayed, and to be on the coast to coast walking track to receive this appalling service, is absurd. No toilet paper in some rooms.. No spare rolls in other rooms. No heating on, no hot water system turned on. Absolutely pathetic. Everywhere else has been brilliant. The man who manages, is not a people person, and needs to focus on what he may be good at, stick to 1 thing and do it properly. Don't stay here. It's a joke! 1/2 A Star at the most.

Fantastic food. Very friendly welcome and great service. Was there during a very busy Easter weekend, and really enjoyed it. Great place.

So some points - no TV in the bedroom - its pretty basic requirement. limited draft beer [1] - and wine red or white. Food great but limited if your staying more than one day. You need to sort out the till system nobody had a clue how to use it !!!!

We had a wonderful evening resting at The Mardale after a long hike. The food was great and the owners provided a great service. Highly recommended!

Our second visit, I was sufficiently impressed when I first came here back in October to want to return. The pub and rooms may not be of the finest quality but all our needs were catered for and Jess is an exemplary hostess. Attentive to detail and with a genuine desire to ensure guests are happy, she made such a difference to our visits. Chef Johhny provided some exquisite dishes on the menu, just unbelievable for a small pub like this. All the support staff are friendly and helpful as well - well done. If you wish to stay on the eastern side of the Lakes or explore the Eden valley this is a great place to stay, you won't be dissapointed. I fully intend to return again in the future.

We arrived on one of the days the inn had was closed so we were met and shown to our room. We were offered to have our evening meal booked for us and took this option choosing to go to Haweswater Hotel. We had a lovely meal watching a red squirrel sitting in the hotel wall. Back at the Mardale inn the log fire was lit for us to sit in a snug area where you could watch tv or read. The room was lovely, bright and clean. We chose a early self service breakfast. I would definitely come back.

The pub was quite in keeping with an old village. The staff were helpful and accommodation comfortable and quiet. There was a friendly atmosphere in the bar area and the food was of good quality. The Sunday breakfast starting at 9.30am was a little late for us as we needed to make an earlier start. The chef was good enough to make us a sandwich breakfast to take with us on our journey. Overall a good experience and would recommend to others. It is about 10 mins drive from Shap on country roads.
