It bears the name of the river passing through the city of Plovdiv. The nickname is based on the club colors – the Yellow-and-Blues. Metodi Batselov, Marko Shivarov and the coach-player and captain Irina Garbucheva are the club's first functionaries. In 1957 Maritza earns the right to play in the 1st division of Bulgarian women’s volleyball. The club's first professional coach, Georgi Markov creates the first girls', youth and junior teams in 1960. The first national titles in these three categories come in 1961, 1963 and 1964, respectively. Maritza’s first women’s national medal, a bronze, comes in 1979. In 1997 Maritza plays its first Bulgaria Cup final. 2009 marks the beginning of beach volleyball at Maritza as Diana Malinova & Rusena Slancheva win the title at the women’s Balkan Championship. The start of the cooperation between Maritza and Intercomplex in 2009 sets off a new era of growth and development for the club. In 2011, a Maritza pair wins the club's first women’s national championship title in beach volleyball. In 2012, Maritza’s women’s volleyball team triumphs with its first national trophy at last – the Bulgaria Cup. Also in 2012, Maritza hosts the first volleyball Plovdiv Cup tournament and wins the trophy, but has not repeated this achievement since. 2013 brings Maritza the first U22 and U18 national beach volleyball gold medals. In 2015, Maritza wins its second national cup, its historic first women’s volleyball national title and the Super Cup, shaping up the only golden treble in the history of Bulgarian volleyball. In 2016 Maritza’s women’s beach volleyball team wins its first medal (silver) from the National Club League. Also in 2016, Maritza becomes the first Bulgarian team in the women’s Champions League since its creation in 1999.
