Really good place to visit when visiting Plymouth. Shame about the buildings around it, they spoil the overall effect. But then again it give you an idea of how much things have changed.
Love the history of this building
The building is definitely very nice, great luck that it survived the devastating WW2 bombings. However, the museum makes no use of it. It's merely an unintuitive amalgamation of exhibits with not even a really outstanding item. Reception was frosty with no guidance given. One of the more remarkable items, an 1870 dolls house, was placed with no lighting at all and behind a plastic screen that was blurred from fingers and noses of the many children who tried in vain to get a glimpse of it during the past decades. The "Blitz" documentation was pretty well made, but somehow left the impression of serving as an excuse for having not much to display or tell about earlier history. If this was a little town history exhibition run by volunteers I would have provided some more stars... N.B.: The museum has no toilets for visitors
Unfortunately the Merchant's House is temporarily closed for maintenance work. Date for reopening not fixed. Check website for details.
Hidden little gem, has to be one of the oldest buildings in the whole of Plymouth
