A great work of engineering overlooking the Menai Straits joining mainland Wales to Anglesey. Enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Improvement to the strategic London to the sea-port Holyhead route to catch the boat to Ireland became more of a priority in 1800 when Ireland joined the UK through the Act of Union. This meant that the numbers of people wishing to cross the Straits increased as politicians commuted to and from Ireland to parliament in London. In 1819, Thomas Telford took up the challenge & began working on his Menai Suspension Bridge. Completed on 30 January 1826, it was the biggest suspension bridge in the world (at the time). Sixteen huge chains held up 579 feet of deck, allowing 100 feet of clear space beneath. STOP PRESS 06-Jan-2021: engineering work will commence this month to replace footpath panels on Menai Suspension Bridge - one of the world’s most historic suspension bridges.

Now open. Went for lunch. Good food and great staff. Felt perfectly safe. Had to register different entry and exit. Will go again.
