Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic culture of India which inspired Tibetan Medicine and ancient Chinese Medicine as well as Greek Medicine. It is perceived as one of the most ancient and well documented system of medicine equally relevant in modern times. More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge). Ayurveda is based on the premise that the universe is made up of five elements and, also divides bodily substances into five classical elements viz. earth , water , fire , air and ether /space, and divides tissue into seven types as: plasma (rasa), blood (rakta), muscles (māmsa), fat (meda), bone (asthi), marrow (majja), and semen (shukra). Ayurveda also names three elemental substances the dosha s or energies viz: Vata, Pitta and Kapha and states that a balance of the doshas results in health, while imbalance results in disease The main classical Ayurveda texts begin with accounts of the transmission of medical knowledge from the Gods to sages, and then to human physicians. Ayurveda not only heals and cure the diseases but also detoxicate the body and develop immunity. The Ayurvedic medicines are extracted from the leaf, root and stem of plants and completely harmless.
