The site at Port au Choix feels like sacred ground, certainly well-trod, long-lived-upon ground. To the uneducated it would appear at first a verdant uninhabited and remote place (and that is in summer, let's not think about winter). Yet walking the site and the interpretive signs (then the museum) one begins to see the truth: The First Peoples, nomads, who earned their living from the sea called this home for tens of thousands of years prior to the Norse and later the French and British that came here. The museum is excellent as well with its thousands of artifacts and the displays give one a sense of how the First Peoples lived here. Plan to spend a few hours to get the most from your visit.

Wonderful center. Canada seems to have this skill of putting a huge amount of information into tiny buildings. If you are interested in native history THIS is one of the sites you want to visit.
Amazing experience. Saw the limestone barrens up close complete with Caribou just wandering along the ocean. Folks at the visitor center were very friendly and super helpful. A must stop along the Viking Trail.
Learn all about 4 ancient cultures all coming together. Part of the Viking Trail. Visit the interpretative center. (Small fee for entry) hike the trails around the point and through the landscape. Caution the main trail loop has about 8 stories worth of stairs. Foot trails only no ATV access. Lots of wildlife. Mostly around morning or evening. Moose and Caribou can be seen as well as whales and seals. Lots of places to hike. I highly recommend taking the long walk from the North side of the point back around to the lighthouse. You will need 2 vehicles unless you want to walk the 5km back. Lots of untouristy places for pictures there.
An isolated location with unique landscape!
Was great experience we saw several caribou. Lovely place to have our lunch. Thanks to the staff for all the info.
Check out the artifacts in the museum displays. Go for a stroll on the beach to see where fossils and ancient human history meet. Keep your eyes peeled for the local caribou herd.
Great facility and very informative staff. Wonderful to learn!
