Port Meadow is one of the last pieces of common land left in the UK. Some people from Wolvercote village who have held onto their rights are still able to graze horses, cows and even geese on it. As it's on the flood plain, when the river is very high the whole of it floods, making it look like an inland sea. Port Meadow's very popular with people for sunbathing and picnicking in the summer and the local sailing club sail dinghies up and down.. It's about a mile and half from one end to the other and it's well worth taking an afternoon out to walk round the whole thing.

Port Meadow is as usual flooded in parts at this time of year. Walked from the Perch towards Lock, really beautiful walk. So much to see. Path a bit muddy in places but easily negotiable. Dots in water are wild swimmers!
We didn't visit in the height of summer, but I can see the appeal if it was hot enough to dip our toes in. A vast space for a picnic, walk or a great chance to be one with local wildlife. The car park is free, I'd advise getting there early for a prime space. There's a pub just over the bridge if you need a break from the nature and the water.
Having lived in Oxford for decades I cant believe I hadn't taken advantage of this lovely spot before. Excellent walking options, great for the kids with the river and the horses. Loved it and will go back often. Prepare to get muddy if there has been any rain at all.
Wonderful piece of semi wilderness in Oxford. Roaming horses and cows are not uncommon. Beautiful sunsets. I love it.
