Football For Cancer was started as an idea by our founder, Ray Ogilvie in 2008, whose family had been affected by cancer. His idea was simple, raise money to go to a local cancer charity by getting a group of friends together to have a mini football tournament, with them raising money for doing so. 4 teams were created to play the first event in 2009. It was a huge success. So much so, there was a demand to repeat it again for 2010, but instead of 4 teams, it grew to 8. What made this especially different though was how it made sure it connected with its community in Portsmouth. Local stadia were used to raise the profile, the teams were mixed at random so you'd start as strangers not knowing the person next to you in the changing room to become 'FFC brothers'​ by the end, kits were made for each team, with the players able to select the names on their own shirt, to represent someone they wanted to who has fought or is fighting cancer. It began to mean something to each and everyone. In addition, as the fever of FFC took hold, the ladies and children wanted to be involved, thus the family and ladies walk was introduced. Now not just the men, but everyone could take part, spreading the word, raising funds and becoming part of the FFC family. As we speak, more and more events are added and ideas sparked to help FFC grow and grow. And so FFC grew, supporting local charities from 2009 to 2014, raising over £200,000 in the process, culminating in a cheque for £55,000 passed to Naomi House in 2014 in FFC's best year of raising. FFC also achieved official charity status in 2014 and is now proudly raising and supporting its local community in the fight against cancer.
