Smooth experience, but 10 cleaning fee is a deceptive practice because they will always have to clean the car. It’s not like you could keep the car clean and they nudge you into paying the fee upfront where it is hard to get it back in the end even if you did go to the car wash with it yourself.

I had a very good experience. I got a very good deal on a price comparison website for rent for 3 days, and I took their deal to switch for a diesel car for only 15euro extra. The car was good and comfortable (5 years old). They did warn me about the cleaning fee and I took lots of photos of the car to make sure I wasn't blamed for existing scratches, but I didn't have to pay anything extra at the end. I also didn't have to wait very long to get the car or to deliver, but maybe I was lucky.

Probably your best choice at Lajes. Locally owned (Azorean) and well run. Have rented from their Sao Miguel locations a few times and never had issues, and here at Lajes was no different: friendly and accommodating staff, fluent English, took the time to explain the rental agreement, no hard upsell, just keen on making sure you’re comfortable and on your way as quickly as possible. Very reasonable rates ( 1 week for a Nissan micra was 115 Canadian. That’s with taxes). Make sure you’re comfortable driving manual - limited automatic options ( you can arrange an automatic in advance but jeez it’s pricey!) good selection of cars, and there’s a reason you will see their cars all over the island: they just do a better job than the others. As always take pictures of the car on arrival AND on departure!

I'm writing this as an advisory to all tourists, and on behalf of my father. These people are scammers they rent you cars that are severely scratched, tell you when your picking up not to worry about it. Then when your returning the car and leaving the island they screw you. 236 euros for damages do to scratches, my dad reluctantly paid them. Got in a cab to the airport, told the cab driver the story and the cab driver drove him to the police station. The cab driver told my dad it's a big problem with that rental agency, and that the police will make them return the money. The police station is located right across from the rental agency. The police officer went there and after a short discussion they apologized and reimbursed his money. The police officer told the employee of the agency that they are hurting tourism and other businesses with there actions. My father was born on the island and speaks Portuguese, in no way does this represent the island or its people. He is very disappointed that tourists would have this as there last memory of a beautiful culture, and island. Just don't rent here do yourself a favour, thanks for reading I hope it helps.

The worst car rental experience in Azzorre islands. When we dropped off the car (an old Nissan Micra) they realised that there was a scratch not existing before even if it was noted in the paper filled by the controller at the time of drop on. They asked us to pay for the damage without showing us the picture of the car at the time of the drop on. The amount we had to anticipate was 500. We had the impression that this is a technique they use to collect money from the car insurance agencies. It never happened to us. We strongly recommend to not rent cars through Ilha Verde agency, there are several others car rental agencies that, even if smaller, do not speculate on inexistent damages without a real proof.

SCAMMERS, DO NOT RENT HERE. They gave me an old, fully scratched car with 85k km only to charge me for an additional 300 euros at return for another small scratch that was clearly done with a key. Most likely by one of their affiliates. I've rented cars all over the world, and nothing like this happened to me before. They are shameless, give your business to someone honest that know how to treat customers well.

Midnight fee -before midnight . I arrived at the car rental at 23:56 but another customer was ahead of us, therefore I had to wait about 10 minutes until it was my turn. Once it was my turn they told me they would charge the after midnight fee. I told him I was in line before midnight which they disputed. I don’t like to be cheated so I refused to proceed and accept the charge.
