Pécs was selected as European Capital of Culture in 2010, one of the reasons why it was selected as ECC was its cultural richness. Few centuries ago Hungarian, German, Bosnian, Serbian, Croatian, Austrian, Czech, Moravian and Italian people lived here together in peace and harmony until fire nation... Oh wrong story These people from different backgrounds were already practicing theatre culture, but there wasn't a specific building where they could perform. To meet the demand for a high-quality structure, the city council set up a committee, led by mayor János Aidinger to coordinate the planning. In a design competition in 1890, Architecht's Adolf Lang and Steinhardt design was selected. Construction of National Theatre started in 1890 and finished in 1895. The premiere was held on 5 October 1895 with the play Bánk bán.

Staying in Pécs for the New Year, our group decided to see a show here. Great atmosphere in a beautifully restored old building which is one of the stars of the show. There was a real buzz to the place and most people were dressed for an occasion which gave a great atmosphere and an exciting buzz. We saw the musical \Mont Marte Iboya\/\The Violet of Mont Marte\ and we really enjoyed it.
Awesome place, historical touchings on interior design... even you can find something in English!
A cosy Viennese-style theatre with great acoustics — actors use voice projection only.
The beautiful theater building is located in the center of Pécs. Culture Temple. Required to visit.
Beautiful
Pécs has a great theatre. Programs are colorful. The buffet is also affordable.
A great ensemble is always playing interesting pieces on a very high level. The theatre is also the venue for the anual festival of theatres in Hungary and hungarian speaking theathres from the countries around Hungary (Carpatian basin).
