e Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE)[1][2][3] is an autonomous organisation[4][5] or governmental agency under the Ministry of Environment and Forests,[6] Government of India. Headquartered in Dehradun, its functions are to conduct forestry research; transfer the technologies developed to the states of India and other user agencies; and to impart forestry education. The council has 9 research institutes and 4 advanced centres to cater to the research needs of different bio-geographical regions. These are located at Dehradun, Shimla, Ranchi, Jorhat, Jabalpur, Jodhpur, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Allahabad, Chhindwara, Aizawl, Hyderabad and Agartala.[7]ICFRE is the largest organisation responsible for forestry research in India.[2][8] ICFRE was created in 1987, under the Central Ministry of Environment and Forests (India), to direct and manage research and education in forestry sector in India.[citation needed] ICFRE is headed by a Director General with headquarters at Dehradun.[citation needed] ICFRE became an autonomous council under the Ministry in 1991
The college has facilities for teaching undergraduate and post graduate degree programs, viz. Biodiversity Park on 50 ha, containing more than 150 plant species, Mist chamber and Nursery unit, which produces around 1 lakh seedlings of 50 tree species and several MAP species, Block Plantation of different timber tree species and multipurpose tree species, Bamboo museum having collection of 19 species, various Agroforestry Models suitable for the region, Charak Medicinal Plants Garden having 183 species, and Forest Products Processing Center which facilitates value addition of MAP and is approved by FAD department. Laboratory facilities with state of art instruments is available in the institute which includes Super Critical Analyzer, HPLC, Universal Wood Testing Machine, UV Spectrophotometer, Global Position System (GPS), Field and tracking equipments, Tree Canopy Analyzer, Portable Leaf area meter, Flame photometer. These instruments are being used by the faculty and students for conducting quality research work.
