Los Caracoles
Well, this place gave me food poisoning, so I obviously can't recommend it. I did want to post a review, though, both to warn people about the sanitary issues and to comment on the owner's curious attitude when I expressed concern.
We visited the place a few days ago after having read some good reviews. Being light eaters, we normally don't have lunch when we dine out for dinner. Basically, the experience was ok, except for the food issue; nothing special, really, just your normal seafood and chicken entrees. Very small selection, though. Anyway, I had the shrimp (coconut, fried), and after a few bites I became aware of a slightly “off” taste which at first I thought was my imagination. After a couple of more bites I felt more definite about the unusual taste and called the owner over. To my surprise, he became very defensive and said something like “there's nothing wrong with the food, I don't have bad food,” and most strangely, “there's no more,” (even though I hadn't asked for a replacement). He walked off and completely ignored us for the rest of the meal (needless to say, I didn't finish the shrimp). He barely acknowledged us when we paid the bill. At about 2 a.m the next morning, I woke up with the awful symptoms of food poisoning, of which I will spare you the details. If you've ever had it, you know how bad it is.
Looking back, it's difficult not to think that the owner wasn't aware of the problems with the shrimp, just because of his bizarre reaction. Maybe I misread the situation, but it sure seemed like strange behavior from a restaurant owner. At any rate, be cautious with this place. For myself, I'm not able to look at shrimp for awhile.
