I’ve been coming to Spike’s for years. It has a welcoming atmosphere. I can say that the security does their job: what someone says is “micro-managing,” I would say is actually being on duty and not letting potentially violent situations get out of hand. If you are too drunk, you will be asked to leave. This is truly an L.A. bar with L.A. people: hipsters can stay in Silver Lake. Why do they want to take over everything? And they write bad reviews when they feel out of place somewhere. Spike’s caters to the general public but also to the L.A. punk rock subcultures, and very few places can compare. It’s a great spot; give it a chance if you haven’t been there. The music is good, and I always find a beautiful girl to dance reggae with me there. The pool tables are always clean and well lit. I had some good tacos last night that were reasonably priced, and washed them down with a Mississippi Mud; thank you for selling the big bottles, making me feel like a real man. Come to Spike’s with respect and you’ll be treated with respect.
I love it here. The atmosphere is almost always killer. The drinks are good and strong. The art hiung everywhere speaks so much to the character of the bar as well; it's just a good hang our spot and is a huge part of the California alternative scenes.
Spike's, Spike's, Spike's... What can I say about Spike's that hasn't already been said? It's terrible and great all at the same time. Bartenders are pretty undertrained which is fine if you're looking to just get hammered on badly mixed drinks that are way too strong. Drinks are on priced on par with other bars. I wouldn't say they're cheap. The sound has been upgraded recently and the stage is bigger. I played there last night and saw that they have an actual sound booth set up, not just a rickety portable sound kit next to the stage. Crowd is usually too busy playing pool to notice there's even a band playing, but that's fine. I've seen big and small crowds there. It's a bar you go to for drinking, playing pool, and watching live music. I've never had a problem with security there. In fact they've always been very courteous to me, and they take down license plates of cars that are parked behind other cars so they can move if the people parked in front want to leave. I think it's a great place and I always like going there. But don't go expecting 5 star treatment, clean bathrooms, or the upper echelon clientele. It's definitely a neighborhood dive bar. Always a good time!
Micro-managing security guard in the parking lot. Powerful fragrance of ripe testicles upon entering. 7 for terribly mixed half-sized well drinks. I threw mine away, it was so bad. The event was poorly planned & executed, the music was not mixed well. The generic high-contrast photos of dead rock stars on the wall wasn't really doing the atmosphere any justice. And the gang of "Skinheads" starting fights outside was headed by a man who works inside the bar. So their parking lot security is only there to harass customers, not the bar-paid gang of bullies that's also harassing customers. I've been to Skinhead, Punk, Psychobilly, and Metal events all over the West Coast and even organized a couple events of my own. Spike's Bar & Billiards is a place that I would NEVER promote or send customers to under any circumstance. They're going to waste their time, get gouged for their hard-earned money, harassed by a security guard, and maybe even be assaulted by a employed gang in the parking lot. Please, stay at home with your records, you'll have a better time.

(Bauhaus), Kim Fowley (Manager of The Runaways), The Frantic Flintstones, and many more! Check out these promoter nights for best time to go: RevItUp, Club Vicious and Rhythm n' Booze.
