Roy Martin is a gifted mediator. His quiet, sensitive approach makes clients feel safe and understood. When my husband of 32 years and I sought his help to dissolve our already-broken marriage, Roy's assistance transformed us individually, and as a couple. He began by teaching us about the nature of healthy and unhealthy relationships along with the reality and pain that comes as they are dissolved. He addressed the deeper levels of complex emotions that can arise as well as how to navigate the tumultuous waters of grief as we face the loss of relationship. After attempting to agree on financial matters and getting nowhere, we were challenged to confront the underlying issues in our marriage by naming them, owning our own decisions and actions, and asking/granting forgiveness for the ways in which we each hurt the other. Roy carefully guided each step of this process in a way that the 7 counselors we had seen through the course of our marriage could never touch. This one session was transformational for each of us because it brought to light some core issues that had truly never been understood, or effectively addressed. It also provided us with a sense of closure for our relationship that felt respectful, loving, and authentic. That propelled us to move forward in coming to agreements that will allow us each to live independently, without the burdens of a win/loss situation. Roy skillfully and strategically facilitated a process that left us feeling healthy and whole and ready to move forward as grace-giving people who managed a divorce with integrity. We are better people because of our work with Roy Martin.

Recently I engaged Mr. Martin to represent me where my ex-wife was attempting to take shared custody of my son. Although Mr. Martin prefers to avoid court and resolve issues collaboratively, previous efforts toward constructive communication with my ex-wife have never been effective. Unfortunately, proceeding to court was my last and only option. From the beginning, Mr. Martin listened and understood the details of my case. Preparing to have my case heard, we spent a lot of time going over my declarations. Once we were in court, it became clear to me how important this effort was. Going into this, Mr. Martin was very up front about the potential costs, and the reality that it is not possible to be certain about the court's decision. Although I felt we had a good case based on my ex-wife's actions, this left me with no false perceptions about the outcome. At least I knew what I was getting into. When the time came for Mr. Martin to present my side of the situation in court, he was skilled and confident. Both in communicating my position, and presenting evidence to the court. In the end I am very happy with my decision to fight for retaining equally shared custody of my son. Throughout the process Mr. Martin has been competent, professional, and completely honest about all aspects of my case, there have been no unwelcome surprises. In any aspect of family law, I would recommend Mr. Martin without hesitation.
