We stumbled across this beautiful Japanese garden while waiting for our next train to Akita. We only had an hour or so in Sakata. It was an unexpected chance to rejuvenate our weary travelers’ souls.

Not a big museum but a very rich exhibition. Japanese artifacts from past centuries from the Shonai area, including original writings by the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho. But the garden is one of a kind, it must be on a top list of Japanese gardens. It's so beautiful, so delicate, so perfect that words cannot describe its beauty.
It's beautiful, but at the time we were there, there is no one else except us.
A marvelous look into the history of Shonai. The gardens are beautiful no matter the season, and the changing exhibits in the museum and old mansion ate always fascinating!
