I went into a self-defense class at Progressive Martial Arts with a general interest in self-defense but not knowing what to expect. By the end, it was well worth my time and will definitely be attending another one in the future. Bryon clearly has a deep knowledge of the field and ability not just to answer any questions you may have, but to help you develop your own self-defense mindset. He taught in a way that would be simple for even beginners with no experience to pick up moves quickly. He started simple and in just the one class built confidence and provided the necessary skills to build from moving forward. I was a total beginner and never felt uncomfortable thanks to Bryon's ability to keep everybody engaged and learning. Altogether a great experience and look forward to working with Bryon and the Progressive Martial Arts school again in the future.

I have trained at Progressive Martial Arts when I lived in California a few years ago. If I still lived there I would still be hitting the mats. Coach Bryon has a training style that I believe is unmatched. He caters to your goals and has the right network to catapult your dreams into reality. While under Progressive Martial Arts I had achieved many fighting accomplishments in just a short period of time. No body can take away the experience that I gained from training with Progressive Martial Arts even though I moved back to Hawaii a piece of me through blood, sweat ,& tears is in the Dojo in San Clemente.

Coach Bryon is a great teacher who fosters a great atmosphere. I’ve trained with other instructors who let ego get in the way, or piecemealed out techniques to keep students from progressing too much, in order to maximize profits. Bryon doesn’t hesitate to teach, he wants his students to be their best. “Ok, that’s great, now from here you’ve got more options. Let me show you,” is a constant refrain. It’s also a good indicator when you make a mistake. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard Bryon yell, he’ll either tell you straight or subtly offline. No part of that is the typical egomaniac exerting authority, so typical of martial arts gyms.

Sensei Bryon Schnell truly is a master of mixed martial arts. I started training at Progressive Martial Arts six years ago, seeking out an authentic, certified Muay Thai instructor and Sensei Bryon has since introduced me to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Eskrima, Karate, and other martial arts. Because Progressive Martial Arts has been around since 1996 and Sensei Bryon is actually ranked in all of the arts individually, he has the ability to develop a unique fighting style for each student that works for their body composition, level of athleticism, all while accommodating previous injuries (and preventing new ones). Sensei Bryon prioritizes safety and respect so women of all ages feel safe and confident training here. The vibe of the academy is very laid back and fosters a family-esque environment but is still a traditional academy so kids and adults alike learn discipline, ownership, and how to work as a team. Whether you are looking to get in shape, learn to defend yourself and your family, or want to be a professional fighter, Progressive Martial Arts is the best system and academy reaching South Orange County/North San Diego.
