Various colored mountain. very strange shape of rocks. if I was in the moon
like
Incredible rainbow on the ground created by mixtures of minerals. We went before sunset and it was amazing! No fee, no facilities but something was being built. The valley is quite high - 3,5 km so do not rush and pace yourself. And better save this place after you visit the Valley of Moon, as it is difficult to compare to this place. It is an hour drive from San Pedro on a paved road. The last 8 km are not paved, yet quite good road.
Rainbow valley was about 1 hr away from San Pedro de Atacama. We were in a small group tour and therefore the tour guide explained geology, archaeology, and history about the place. The scenery was good but it was very dry and hot. We did a morning tour and the afternoon will be too hot to walk around. You can see rocks and mountains with beautiful colors, colored by different minerals.
Valle Arcoiris was one of the least visited areas which made it even more better. There were less visits when we explored. Be amazed with seriously out of this world rock formations and colours. Our guide was very informative with the geology in this particular location. Definitely a a must when you're in San Pedro.
Certainly one of the tours you should take whilst in the Atacama. Interesting paths take you through various terrains where different minerals create lovely coloured rock structures. Probably worth 5 stars on a good day, but for us, this tour was not so good, mainly due to the tour operator - 'Miscanti Tour Operador' - on this day. Their bus was small, full and very cramped! I had to be moved into the front bench seat with the driver and guide, I was so uncomfortable in the back. Whilst in the bus, we passed through many areas of Valle Arcoiris, or 'Rainbow Valley' as it is popularly known, that were very colourful and I would have liked to photograph - but we did not walk around many of these areas. The areas we walked around were quite interesting, and particularly so the areas containing well-preserved petroglyphs. Our guide performed well, explaining these to us. Just sorry this day was not as good as it could have been.
Beautiful valley with many colors for different rocks.
My favorite place in atacama so far. The road is really quite good to drive on as long as your paying close attention. Follow b207 and take the fork left, there is no sign. This road will be gravel. Stunning colorful mountains with lots of little paths to go in further for a closer look. We didn’t have to pay to enter. We continued after to Rio Grande, which I would recommend as well.
The name Rainbow Valley comes from the various colors of sediments in the mountains, composed of calcium carbonate (white), clay (red) and copper oxide (green). All this mix is awesome!
