Really all that is here is a monument, but it is a very important site in the history of Peru. The presence of the fort helped pacify nearby Indian tribes and made this region safer for European settlement and for travel. In the 1800s the main trade route connecting Peru's Pacific coast to the Amazon was the famous Moyobamba Route through the north of the country. But two developments changed that. First steamboats began traveling on the Ucayali River and then the railroad was built from Lima to La Oroya. By the early 1900s the northern route was forgotten and travel went through central Peru - on the train to La Oroya, then a few days on horseback (passing through San Ramon), and then boarding a steamboat. That would not have been possible without the fort here to make the region safe.
