Nice trail that wanders through the dunes area along the ocean. The southern section wanders through a marsh and thick forest. Trail is mostly paved except for a small section on the south end. There are restrooms along the trail and free parking is available.

The discovery trail stretches from Long Beach to Ilwaco. It is great for both bikes and walking. The Long Beach and Seaview part of the trail is entirely paved, easy to ride and mostly follows the ocean. When you are about 2 miles from Ilwaco the trail will cut into the forest and will become a expert level biking trail featuring large climbs and descends. The trail at this point is not paved and features some wooden bridges that can be incredibly slippery on a rainy day.

I loved the Discovery Trail! We stayed at the Adrift Hotel and found the paved path between the hotel and beach. I had to explore it the next day. Most of the people I met on it did it by bicycle, which makes the most sense because of its sheer length. One time in Ilwaco I noticed a sign for the Trail. Another time in Cape Disappointment I saw the Trail meandering thru the State Park. I did not realize that it goes all the way from the Ilwaco Marina, thru Cape Disappointment State Park, down Beards Hollow, and all the way up the beach dunes and forest to Long Beach and beyond. My long walk took me down the Trail to Beards Hollow and out to the extreme south end of Long Beach. The trail provided a wilderness experience out of sight of the urbanized strip of the Peninsula. The combination of coast forest, dune grass, and Sandy surf refreshed me.
