It's not your business

The school is unprofessional. The 5th grade English teacher was the worst. It's majority white teachers who talk to the kids and parents in a way that is \dumbed down\. Accountability for teachers/staff seems non existent. Teachers speak to students in a tone that is not appropriate and at times hostile/superior.

It's a Tier 1 school now! Let's hope that counts for something significant. It's my kid's first year at Shoesmith (2nd and 3rd grade). The school has made a good first impression, so I'm taking it one day at a time. Everyone (parents and faculty) seems proud of the school and committed to maintaining the new status. I plan to be active as well in the hopes that we can make a difference. I'll revisit my review mid-year in the hopes of changing it to five stars!

This is an up and coming school in Hyde Park. They have a great partnership with the University of Chicago Neighborhood Schools Program. The new administration empowers its teachers to go above and beyond for their students. The new principal is working hard to bring in extra resources such as yearlong Spanish instruction through LANGO and yearlong fine arts instruction from Hyde Park Art Center. There is a Friends of Shoesmith group that is working hard to support and transform the school by volunteering, writing grants, acquiring sponsors, and working to get the community involved in the school. The Local School Council is becoming more and more active and clearly want what's best for the school. It's located in a beautiful park in a safe and hip neighborhood. I think that in a few more years, this school will be a school of choice for many more parents in the neighborhood.

Shoesmith has truly been a second family to my child. They provide a plethora of academic resources via partnerships with the University of Chicago, in addition to a variety of in-house programs. The staff and administration are attentive and professional.

My son attends this school and lets just say his first year (kindergarten) was horrible. The teacher was very mean to him, he came home almost everyday depressed, sad, and angry. On top of that he says that he doesn't want to go to school anymore Smh really sad. The teacher never communicated effectively with me nor my sons father, she blew us off every time we tried to discuss our concerns about our son with her. She treated him very badly because of that, and now my son is broken; she broke him and I'm pissed and angry because I've tried to reach out to the principle many times. So this is why this school deserved one star, plus there is a lack of extra curricular activities. Their turning our kids into zombies!!!!
