LEGAL SYSTEM The courts are independent and autonomous. There is one form of organization for the judiciary. The Judicial organization is simple, consisting of only one type of courts: Courts of general jurisdiction as courts of first instance, Courts of appeal and the Supreme Court of the Republic of Macedonia, which rule in civil and criminal matters, and specialized courts. The Supreme Court of the Republic of Macedonia is the highest court in the country. The Supreme Court of the Republic of Macedonia and the judicial system are not based on the common law, however the highest court takes principal positions and makes principal legal opinions that are obligatory for all judges of the Supreme Court and equalizes the legal practice in the republic. Specialized court in the Republic of Macedonia is the Basic Court Skopje 1 (Criminal Court), which is the only court that adjudicates criminal matters in the area of organized crime. The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Macedonia decides on the conformity of laws with the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia and rules on the protection of the human rights and freedoms. The judicial authority is also carried out by Arbitrations and chosen courts ("private"​ courts) established as permanent and (ad hoc) arbitrations and chosen courts. The Administrative Court and the Supreme Administrative Court are courts that adjudicate administrative disputes.
