One of the best locations for cloud formations and Big Sky in the region...something about the two giant rivers meeting up here? Reclaimed farmland/flood plain. A place naturalizing itself after 200 years of being farmed it's more about being a Sunflower amusement park I suppose (which are still blooming, Sept 1 2020) The fields were intentionally staggered to bloom all summer long.. the last are budding ready to flower/flowering now. The bird population has steadily increased over the years here and it's starting to show more and more as the land -re-develops itself into natural wetlands, woodlands, marshes, prairie, and some standing crops and shallow pools of water... Bald Eagle sightings are frequent and year round, there was a long time standing nest on an adjacent small island just barely down river from the confluence viewpoint. Maybe the Center Main Building is just closed?...not the area. I hope my recent images resolve this and help justify it being open? It's loaded with Ticks, Chiggers, Poison Ivy, Poison Sumac, Poison Oak, large Horse Flies ...there are predators, packs of Coyote , Fox, Bobcat, and I'm 100% certain a Black Bear roams around the edge of slough levy and fields, occasionally straying from the thick thick woods next to the river. When the big pools dry up, they reveal much information about the visitors? It was nothing but cornfield year after year since I could remember...and now it's alive again, until people abuse and mistreat it

By mid-late August the sunflowers are shrunken and dying, so go May- July for those. Our Modoc website could be a bit more accurate and detailed in regards to the Columbia Bottoms- even listed as closed on Google during a Tuesday during daylight hours. It was a beautiful area. Wish we would've known to come earlier for the sunflowers. August is likely too late even though the website says May-Nov. Go earlier in the season.
Beautiful place that visit, even when the Visitor Center is closed. Be aware that as of July 2020 the path from the visitor center had not been repaired after the flooding of 2019, so the going is pretty rough. Drive the road to reach the sunflowers; they are beautiful!
The confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers is the best point at the conservation area, the road of it still closed, unserved, unclean and a lot of dust and dirt since the last flooded in 2019 but you can walk to reach it. Don't forget to climb the platform viewing to see the fields of sunflower in summer, and walk on the wooden trail to see the ducks and some kinds of water wildlife in winter.
Visited the sunflower fields. One is on the right as you drive in and the other is a little way up the road on the left. Lots of visitors but still room to walk around and take plenty of pictures. The sunflowers are in full bloom. Great weather and lots of friendly folks. Bring your camera! A must see! Don't forget to visit the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers!
