We, the Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC), are a quasi-autonomous government-funded body. We act as the national economic development agency for the Falkland Islands. We work across all levels within the islands - national, business and individual - and are mission is to facilitate and support the Falkland Island's business community, in partnership, in order to maximise the economic potential of emerging and existing industries. FIDC was established in 1983, in response to the recommendations made in the Shackleton Report (1982), and were tasked to develop the commercial sector of the Falkland Islands by being one of the principal partners delivering the Economic, Rural and Tourism Development Strategies. We currently operate with an annual budget of c.£2 million, which is primarily funded by the Falkland Islands Government (FIG). To help drive sustainable economic growth, and assist in the creation of new jobs and opportunities, we provide various forms of support and assistance to the Falkland’s business community. Since the 2010/11 financial year we have supplied over £1.1 million in Business and Import Substitution Programme (ISP) Loans to over 35 individuals and businesses. In that same time we have issued just under £188,000 in Business, Development and Infrastructure Grants to over 50 recipients. We will continue to support local businesses at all stages of growth, from start-ups to larger and more-established companies. Alongside these services we direct numerous projects aimed at developing the economy of the Falklands, these include initiatives targetting sectors such as tourism, agriculture and enterprise.
