Great place to start a tour round Reddish. William Houldsworth was a benefactor. His company built Houldsworth Mill and he set up a model village for the company employees. Look up St Elizabeth's church, rectory and the adjoining school. These are the Waterhouse Set designed by the same person who designed Manchester Town Hall and the Natural History Museum in London.. You'll also be able to see the three great mills that were built along the former canal. Houldsworth Mill (mixed use) was a cotton mill. Victoria Mill (residential) and Broadstone Mill (shops and a craft centre) were located on the canal which is now filled in. This canal used to end at the Navigation Pub. Houldsworth built a Mechanics Institute and library, now a working men's club. Some of the original housing is also still standing and opposite the mill are two rows of terraces built with the mill and with a similar design. He also gifted land for Houldsworth Park.
