I put one star because I have to. The owner the husband to be exact is a scam artist at it's finest. First he changes the price without informing me and when I try to explain to him that's not what I paid less than a month ago he wants to argue with me. I then tell him to give me the twenty dollars I gave him and keep the food. He begins to act like I didn't give him any money. Then to top it off he asks me to buy him some food because he hasn't eaten and he's boss doesn't pay him that much. As if I don't know that he owns the business. I haven't been so insulted in all my life. Don't waste your time buying from this man. If he thinks he can prey on you he will. In all my years of living I have never had such an experience. Please take your time and spend your money somewhere that demonstrates good customer service and appreciates their customers.

Always amazing! Love the texture of the Sumah's West African Restaurant. The garlic noodles are super tasty and not too oily, and I can never get enough coconut rice!

The Shaw location has been closed for a long time. I've had trouble ordering from the Bowie location. I think it is difficult for them to run the business from Bowie while they wait for the regular location to, hopefully, open again. They've always had a long wait time for food. An hour is not uncommon. So just know that you will have to work hard and be patient to get this food! Having said that, no West African restaurant in the DMV comes close to Sumah. Ok, I haven't tried them all, but I've tried a lot. The food at Sumah is worth the trouble. Their stew is the best. Their egusi is the best. Their plantains are the best. They used to make their own ginger beer. Idk if they still do. I used to order it by the gallon! They are also kind and straightforward. When I first ate at the Shaw location, they gave me a plate with a sample of every stew to try. This place is run like they are passionate about the food, but winging it a bit with the rest of the business. And, honestly, I find it charming. The food is the important part, so 5 stars.

I grew up eating Mr. Sumah's food. A staple of the Shaw community. If you love West African cuisine, then this is the place for you.

Never been here but I heard how good the food was and I was eager to try it. Nonetheless I called so excited to make my order and the receptionist took my order then says this location is closed but the pick up location is in Bowie MD....wow ok no thanks that's so unprofessional.

Poor customer service. Ordered food & the delivery was two hours late. Asked for a discount & the owner refused. I will not support this business anymore. Do better.

I’ve been coming here sporadically since I was 16 and Sumah hasn’t failed me once. The food is amazing with just the right amount of flavor and spice. I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT️️

I read the reviews so I was prepared and able to exercise patience in order to enjoy my visit. It took a long time for us to be seated (like 10 min of being ignored) and way longer for the waitress to come over to get our order. She brought a sample plate since my friend never had west African food before. I loved getting to taste everything so that I could see which dishes they really do well. We ended up ordering pepper soup (with cow foot), egusi, and palava sauce. All of it was AMAZING!! I also tried the ginger juice since I wasn’t aware it was BYOB and neglected to bring a bottle. The owner was very nice and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The food was much better than it was at Appioo. I’ll definitely be back!
