I feel like this place was specifically made as an authentic Japanese experience for foreigners (based in the composition of other guests) and as someone who has lived in Japan for many years, I think that is A-OK! Every room has a private bath with beautiful scenery. All of the meals are delicious and filling. There is even a little gift shop inside. A wonderful and unforgettable experience.

We just stayed at Kakurean Hidaji for two nights and it was absolutely amazing! The property is very beautiful, with charming rooms in typical Japanese style. The highlight was definitely the private outdoor bath, in which we spent a lot of time. The public onsens with river view are nice too. We were blown away by the quality of the food, with very elaborate menus for both breakfast & dinner. Every dish was delicious and the set-up around the hearth was very cozy, also allowing you to do some grilling yourself, which was fun! Service was also great, with very friendly staff who spoke enough English to help us out. There is a bus stop 1 min away, which is very convenient for getting there or exploring the area. Would 100% recommend this place and hope to be able to return some day!

Amazing place to stay, with private onsen and an amazing attentive staff. Wish we could have stayed a couple nights. The onsen are hot and have great views (specially the public ones, which can be used privately after 9:30pm.) The weakest part of the entire experience in my opinion is the food. The Hida beef was delicious, as was the miso soup. However some of the cooked fish and rice cakes were just ok. Lots of pickled veggies and and other small foods that were just OK.

An unforgettable Japanese experience, the hotel itself, the dinner, the breakfast, the private and public onsens, all exceeded our expectations. It is very easy to reach from Takayama by Shinhotaka bus, the bus stop is very close to the the hotel. The hotel staff were very kind and helpful. A great location to relax and enjoy Japanese hospitality.

Date of stay: 22/2 in, 24/2 out. The two stars are for the two onsens and the sincere and friendly staff who served us dinner. The male staff who checked us out and greeted us into the restaurant acted strangely and rudely. He suddenly dashed through the resting area outside the onsens in total ignorance of causing nuisance to customers and he just looked blank when he saw us in the lobby. His demeanor was creepily cold when he talked and looked at us! I was wondering if it was a psycho in front of me. He left us the worst ryokan experience. The in-room private onsen was so shallow and water only lukewarm! Saving grace was the public onsens were very nice.
