I've attended two courses at Williams and Cleal (bench stool making in Sept 2020 and box making in Oct 2020), and both courses have been fantastic. I have a fairly good knowledge of basic woodworking, but even so, the expertise of the tutors has been invaluable to me in progressing my skills and development. The course sizes are kept quite small so the tutor's assistance on a one-to-one basis is very accessible. The delivery of the content is reasonably intense, but this is good; presumably you want as much as you can get from a weekend course, but the atmosphere is at all times friendly and convivial. I'd highly recommend attendance!

I have taken two courses at William's & Cleal and the tuition is fantastic, second to none. Situated in a BEAUTIFUL part of the UK, would reccomend 100000% to anyone interested in woodwork.

I did the full time 40 week furniture design and making course having worked in an entirely unrelated industry beforehand. In short, the course exceeded my expectations in every way. The intake is restricted to a very small number of students which means you receive extremely personalised tuition. The setting, in amongst idyllic countryside, is picturesque and the school itself is very well equipped to give you everything you need while you’re there. The course is broadly separated into two parts: making and theory. These two elements run simultaneously but are coordinated so that each reinforces the other (the practical skills you learn in the workshop support the theoretical and design syllabus you’ve covered in the studio). I felt this worked well as there’s a lot to learn and it would be easy to forget if you weren’t made to ‘test what you’ve been taught’. Justin, who runs the workshop, is an absolute perfectionist and, by learning from him, you inevitably adopt his exacting approach. As you become more familiar with the fine furniture making industry, it becomes apparent how valuable it is to be a precise, perfecting maker. Another valuable part of the course are the frequent trips. Throughout the year we visited numerous highly regarded furniture makers, specialist suppliers and industry exhibitions. Not only does this give you a privileged insight into the industry but it provides you with valuable contacts for when you start making furniture yourself. In fact, some of the students who were on the course at the same time as me went on to work for some of the makers we visited. All in all, I can’t recommend Williams & Cleal furniture school highly enough. It’s a daunting task setting up on your own as a furniture maker, but having taken the 40 week course at W&C I feel I’ve got the skill and confidence to be able to do this.

Put simply, this place is the best!!! I spent a year and a half doing their bespoke course and loved every second of it. Set in the most idyllic location imaginable, all of the tutors are exceptional, offering patient guidance and an experience tailored to each individual student's requirements. A year after leaving and I feel confident in my ability as a proficient designer / maker, and for those occasions when I do need advice the school are still more than happy to help out in any way they can. If you are looking to start any kind of career or business in furniture you won't find a better place - 5 STARS would do the whole thing again in a heartbeat!

Absolutely fantastic course. I did the 40 week and can't imagine there is a better course. It covers the practical skills as well as theory and design. Justin, Jane and Maria are superb teachers and they create a very supportive environment. As a result of the course I am now able to make high quality furniture.
